A villa with a private pool is a popular choice on Curaçao for families and groups of friends. The difference between a great and a disappointing holiday often lies in details you cannot see in the photos. This is what we look for, including in our own villa.
1. Where on the island do you want to be?
Around Willemstad and the east side it is lively, with shops and restaurants close by. On the west side, in Banda Abou, it is greener and quieter, and bays such as Cas Abao, Porto Marie and Daaibooi are a short drive away. If you stay here, you need a rental car.
2. Is the pool private, and is there shade?
Ask whether the pool is for your party only and whether there is a covered veranda. On Curaçao, shade by the pool matters at least as much as the pool itself.
3. Air conditioning in every bedroom?
Check whether each bedroom has air conditioning and whether the villa has ceiling fans. At Villa Cuchita all three bedrooms have air conditioning. We ourselves often sleep in the master bedroom without it, with only the fan: on our high location the tropical trade wind brings enough cooling. That applies only to the master bedroom; bedrooms 2 and 3 have air conditioning. It is also personal: how warm you find it differs per guest.
4. Secure park and a welcome on site
A secured villa park gives peace of mind. Also ask who welcomes you and who you can reach if something goes wrong. With us, the local manager welcomes you in person.
5. Which costs come on top of the rent?
Ask in advance about the deposit, water, electricity and tourist tax, and whether they are settled beforehand or afterwards. At Villa Cuchita we settle water (€10 per m³) and electricity (€0.65 per kWh) after your stay based on actual use; the deposit is €500 and the tourist tax is 7% of the base rental rate.
